University of Toronto G8 Information Centre

Research Group Members and Associates

Membership of the G8 Research Group consists primarily of academics, business professionals, and Ph.D., MA and senior undergraduate students from around the world. Since its founding in 1987, many distinguished international experts have made contributions to the work of the Research Group. In addition, the ongoing development of the Professional Advisory Council and Special Advisors is serving to create strategic partnerships with G8 experts and major academic institutions from each of the Summit member countries.

The list of involved (current and former) academics at the University of Toronto has included Professor Bill Graham of the Faculty of Law, and Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs; Professor Leonard Waverman of the Department of Economics; Professor Janice Stein and Professor Michael Donnelly of Political Science; Professor Robert Bothwell of History; Professor Wendy Dobson of Management Studies; and Professor Louis Pauly and Dr. Sylvia Ostry of the Centre for International Studies.

Much of the project’s research activity in recent years has been conducted by doctoral, masters and senior undergraduate students at the University of Toronto and elsewhere, and by alumni members of the project who have gone on to professional careers in related fields around the world. The current membership comprises returning Research Group alumni (an ever-growing group) and students who are invited to participate thanks to their particular skills and knowledge.

Enriched by their exposure to the G8 Summit and their experience in the G8 Research Group, members have gone on to pursue careers with organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation, General Electric (Europe), Frost & Sullivan (U.S.), Wood Gundy, Dominion Securities, the Royal Bank of Canada, Andersen Consulting, the Monitor Company, the Bank of Montreal, the Financial Post, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CNN, the Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and other ministries and departments of the Government of Canada, Canadian Pacific Railway, law firms in Europe and North America and universities in Japan, Canada and the United States.
