"UNCTAD IX was a major milestone in the renewal of UNCTAD. In close partnership with the other member states, we succeeded in reforming UNCTAD's intergovernmental machinery and in refocusing its work on a small number of priorities to promote development

• On December 16, 1996 the UN General Assembly UNCTAD IX (Midrand, South Africa, May 1996), as it adopted 28 proposals recommended by its Second Committee.
  
• In a three-part text, the Assembly welcomed the fact that UNCTAD has adopted far-reaching reforms encompassing its programme of work, its intergovernmental machinery and its secretariat. The role of UNCTAD as the focal point within the United Nations
• The fact that the General Assembly endorsed UNCTAD IX suggests that the G7 commitment was kept.
