Press Briefings

Vicente Fox, President of Mexico

July 7 2005/16:30 - Media Centre, Gleneagles, Scotland (by Sarah Brun)

image of Vicente Fox, President of Mexico The Mexican President began his briefing with an expression of solidarity towards Prime Minister Tony Blair and the people of London due to the terrorist bombings of this morning. Like all the world leaders, President Fox emphasized there had no questions as to whether the scheduled meetings between the G8 nations and the G5 countries should continue. Canceling or delaying would only be victorious to the terrorists.

President Fox used the opportunity to remind the media that the G5 nations - China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico - accounted for 40% of the world's population with a $4 trillion annual gross product. He used the analogy of engines, saying that the world, in order to work smoothly, needed two engines; the G8 and the G5. Mexico's role at the summit, he said, was to remind the G8 that they must make things happen. They need to have dialogue, facts and eventually produce results.

The president criticized the WTO (World Trade Organization) for not being as welcoming to new reforms as is perhaps needed. He urged the leaders to expand their debt relief plan using Haiti as an example. In addition, additional aid is needed so that the countries may develop a solid infrastructure.

He concluded with a reminder to the G8 that the current emerging economies are strong and other economies are gaining power in the specific regions, China being the exception as her economy affects the world as a whole and therefore is of great significant to the G8.

Lastly, President Fox wanted to highlight that the G8 should not consider financing developing nations as charity, but rather as a resource investment for the future.
