G7 Gender Equality Ministers Statement on Iran

Berlin, October 14, 2022
[pdf]

We, the G7 Gender Equality Ministers, stand in solidarity with the people rallying in Iran against the violations and abuses of their human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedoms of opinion and expression, following the death in custody of Jina Mahsa Amini. We call on the Iranian government to listen to the concerns of its own people, to respect their rights and to immediately put an end to the ongoing brutal repression of peaceful protests, which stands in contradiction to Iran's obligations under ICCPR. Women's rights are human rights and the Iranian authorities are obligated under international law to guarantee the equal and full enjoyment of all human rights by all women and girls. We applaud the courage of the Iranian women and girls who are peacefully protesting together with their fellow citizens. We, the G7 Gender Equality Ministers, join them in sending the Iranian government a very clear message: they must end all forms of persecution and violence against all Iranians, Iranian women and girls in particular.
