Letter from the Canadian Sherpa to the Prime Minister

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
Langevin Block
Ottawa ON K1A 0A2

Dear Prime Minister,

I am pleased to provide you with the G8 Muskoka Accountability Report for consideration by Leaders at the Muskoka Summit.

This Report is in response to the request by Leaders at the 2009 G8 Summit in L’Aquila, Italy, for an assessment in 2010 of G8 progress in implementing development and development-related commitments.

Under Canada’s chairmanship, a group of senior G8 officials has worked over the past seven months to prepare this Report. The group’s work benefited from input from several international organizations and the active participation of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, whose staff provided invaluable technical assistance to the Canadian chair.

The Muskoka 2010 G-8 Accountability Report assesses G8 progress against recent G8 commitments—primarily starting with the 2005 Gleneagles Summit, identifies the results of G8 actions, and sets out steps for future reporting. This Report is an important step forward in demonstrating the G8’s commitment to open and transparent reporting.

Overall, the Report provides a positive assessment of the G8’s progress in implementing its commitments. There are, however, some areas where progress towards international goals has been slower and work needs to continue. The Report also highlights the constructive role the G8 has played in world affairs, and particularly in global development.

In closing, this Report provides a strong basis for future G8 reporting.

Sincerely,
Leonard J. Edwards
